For almost 11 months as Miss Rodeo Montana 2001, Kristina Mensik of Red Lodge, has traveled over 60,000 miles representing professional rodeo and the Treasure State. She has attended such major rodeos as the Dodge National Circuit Finals in Pocatello ID, the Calgary Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and ProRodeo Hall of Fame Inductions in Colorado Springs, the Nebraskaland Days Rodeo and Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant in North Platte, the Cody Stampede, and the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City SD. Inside Montana, she crisscrossed the state many times over, attending the Montana ProRodeo circuit rodeos, the NRA Finals Rodeo, the Montana High School Rodeo Finals, and all of the Big Sky Region college rodeos. She also attended Governor Martz’ Inaugural Ball, the dedication of the Dan Mortensen Bronze and Montana Wall of Fame in Billings, the Governor’s Cup Marathon in Helena, Walk ‘N’ Talk for Organ Donation Awareness in Billings, and even sang a set at the Cottonwood Folk Festival Hootenanny in Great Falls. In addition, she signed several thousand autographs, did radio and television interviews, attended local community events, hosted numerous "Kiddie Rodeos", and did motivational speaking all around the state.
Now Kristy is preparing to leave for the biggest event in her rodeo career: the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, December 2-9 in Las Vegas, held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo which runs December 7-16. This prestigious pageant is only open to state titleholders of approved member-state organizations. The events for this grueling 8-day pageant begin at 7 a.m. each day and finish after midnight each evening. The contestants will be judged on their horsemanship, appearance, and personalities. The horsemanship score is determined from two go-rounds riding reining patterns on strange horses which the contestants draw for. New this year will be a 2-minute pattern invented by each contestant to show off her drawn horse to the best of its ability. Each girl will also meet individually with the four judges in a 10-minute interview, testing her knowledge of horses, riding, and rodeo. Personality and Appearance are tested through a prepared 3-minute speech, four rounds of public impromptu questions on Current Events, modeling in an elaborate fashion show, official scored luncheons and dinners, and public appearances including autograph sessions, Cowboy Christmas Trade Show, the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Auction, and the NFR. There is also another private 10-minute interview in which the judges are able to question each contestant on her knowledge of Current Events and her opinions and convictions about life in general.
Kristy has been working very hard to prepare for this contest, and she hopes to become the very first Montanan to win the Miss Rodeo America title. You can help Kristy in her quest by sending a card of encouragement. Each afternoon during the pageant, the girls attend "Mail Call" where they are given that day’s cards, flowers, and gifts, which arrived from their supporters back home. This is a great encouragement to the contestants, and Kristy would be so pleased to hear from you. If you would like to join her support team through encouragement, address your mail to:
